We rented the 21ft Starcraft Deck Boat, and it was perfect! We had a group of six adults and one infant, and even had a pack-and-play setup for part of the time! The check-in process went very smooth, and the boat worked perfectly. All three guys we dealt with at the dock were very helpful, going over the boat, suggesting the best spots to go, and what areas to avoid. If you have a boat in the evening, I'd highly recommend going over to the gulf side and watching the sunset! That was beautiful! We spent two days on the water, going all around Marathon, as well as out to the Sombrero Key lighthouse for some AMAZING snorkeling!
Excellent place to rent a boat!! We have rented boats here for several years. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable- any questions or concerns are promptly addressed and resolved.
Day four one engine stopped working. Had to limp it back to dock. They said they would be out to look at it at 8am. Didn't show up until 10. After repairs, the tech wouldn't drive the boat to see if it was running because it was to rough out.
Vacation Boat Rental has definitely earned a 5 Star! On my first day out, my boat gave me some trouble, but Jamie had me switched out and back in the water quickly. I have seen some negative posts on Jamie, but he is all business and gets things done in a very efficient manner. The whole staff is awesome and Eddie is a great guy that also helped us out while there. I would highly recommend them and thanks again, it was a great experience!
Beware...The boat 28 Cape Horn 1 we rented had issues (steering and engine) the entire time. The mechanics didn't have tools. They would come a look at the boat, leave to go get tools from another tech and come back.
On day two, we couldn't steer to the left. The first tech came out and added power steering fluid. He said that was the best he could do since they have been having issues with it. We drove it and had to come back because it wasn't any better. They sent out a second tech. He said nothing was wrong. Jamie called me and told me we didn't know how to drive a boat. All three drivers are boat owners. We found a leak, needed an o-ring. Tech said he didn't have one, walked off and left. We went to the store, bought and repaired the boat.
The boats have been in great shape and we look forward to next year!
Rented the 28ft Cape Horn #2 at the Marathon location on Aug 19 + 20. They were very helpful and made sure that I knew everything about the boat. The only problem I had was that the gas gauge wasn't working. I mentioned it to them and told me they would fix it before the next person rents the boat out. Overall a very good place to rent a boat! Great access to the ocean side and a place to get gas is right there as well! Definitely will be back to rent from them!
I'm a scuba-diver as well, and the snorkeling out at Sombrero Key Lighthouse was as close to diving as I've ever done! It was spectacular! The reef comes up to within just a few feet of the surface, and in some places drops down to the sand at about 25 feet. You'll want to get there early, and tie up to one of the mooring buoys, ideally just to the left and beyond the lighthouse. I snorkeled over to the lighthouse, and came across a 3' nurse shark.
As many of the reviews state, customer service is HORRIBLE, they clearly do not care about return customers, and the boats are ragged out. They did not offer us another boat, refund for two days without a boat, or any other compensation.
